When to visit Brazil
Two Brazils, two calendars
Brazil is huge, so there's no single best month. The south and southeast (Sao Paulo, Rio, Florianopolis, Curitiba) are best in the cooler, drier months, roughly May to August. Days are mild, the air is clearer, and Rio's hikes, like Pedra da Gávea, are far more pleasant than in a steamy February.
The northeast coast flips that pattern. Salvador, Fortaleza, Recife and Maceio do best from September to December, when the rain eases off. Recife's wettest month is June at 251 mm, so a winter trip there can mean soggy beach days.
The Amazon and the interior
Manaus is hottest in September at 34°C, but August is the pick, with the least rain of the year. Belem is wettest in March at 417 mm, so aim for September or October. Brasilia, Goiania and Belo Horizonte are driest from May to July. Their rainy season peaks around December, with heavy afternoon downpours.
Holidays and crowds
High season runs from December to February. That's summer break for Brazilian schools, and beaches from Florianopolis to Rio fill up. Prices climb and rooms go fast. It's also hot and wet in the south, so be ready for sticky afternoons and sudden storms.
Carnival, in February or early March, is the biggest event. Rio's Sambadrome parades and Salvador's street blocos (party groups following music trucks) draw huge crowds. Book months ahead and expect a loud, packed week. If you hate crowds, steer clear.
July is the second busy spell, thanks to school holidays. Florianopolis and Curitiba feel it most, though they're cooler then.
Low season and best value
April to June, and August to November in many places, are quieter. Rio in May or June is a sweet spot: comfortable weather, shorter lines at Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, and calmer beaches. Travelling with kids? Skip January and July if you want space to relax.
