May feels hot and damp, with warm nights and rain on many days. Showers can interrupt beach time at Boa Viagem, so keep your plans flexible. You can still explore Recife Antigo, especially when the sky clears, or duck into the Paço do Frevo and Cais do Sertão when it rains. Expect sticky afternoons and frequent wet spells, rather than a washout every day.

If you hate crowds, May may suit you better than Recife's more popular September-to-December period.

What to do when it rains

The rain can make long outdoor walks less pleasant, and the sea may look less inviting on grey days. Save a visit to the Instituto Ricardo Brennand for a clearer spell; its gardens are best enjoyed when it's not pouring. In Recife Antigo, the Paço do Frevo offers a welcome indoor stop, and you can try bolo de rolo, a local guava-filled cake, nearby.

Crowds and costs

May falls in Recife's wetter, quieter stretch, rather than the drier months that draw more visitors. You'll generally find fewer holiday crowds than during peak travel periods, and fares or hotel rates may be lower. That's useful if you'd rather trade beach weather for a calmer city break.

There's no single major May festival to plan around in Recife. São João celebrations are a big deal in Pernambuco, but their main season comes in June. If you're visiting in May, enjoy the city's museums and food, and leave room for rain to change your plans.
