May: warm and rainy

May stays warm, with highs around 29°C, but rain is part of most days. Showers can interrupt beach time, and cloudy skies often soften the sunshine. It's drier than April, though June is drier still.

You can still enjoy Praia do Futuro when the weather clears, or spend a rainy spell at the Museu da Fotografia or Dragão do Mar. Avoid building a day around a long stretch outdoors; keep some flexibility for sudden showers. The humidity can make walking around the city feel sticky.

Festivals and local days

May 13 brings celebrations for Nossa Senhora de Fátima, with services and a procession around the Santuário de Fátima. It's a chance to see a local religious tradition, but expect the area to be busier that day.

Brazil's Labour Day also falls in May. Some shops and services may close or change hours, so check locally if you're counting on a particular stop. Mother's Day is widely marked, too, and restaurants can be busy with family meals.

Quieter than peak season

If you hate crowds, May can suit you: it's outside Fortaleza's stronger visitor season, which runs from July to December. You may find better-value stays than in those popular months, though prices vary.

Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day option near your beach plans, rather than spending the whole day at Praia do Futuro. If showers catch you there, the beach's barracas—large seaside restaurants—give you somewhere to eat and wait for a break. Try peixe assado, grilled fish, for a local meal.
