April: warm and rainy

April feels hot, sticky and often cloudy. Highs stay around 29°C, but humidity is high and rain falls on most days. March is almost as wet; May is noticeably drier. You may get a sunny spell, but don't count on a full day of blue skies.

The rain can interrupt beach time at Praia do Futuro, so keep your plans flexible. A visit to the indoor galleries at Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura works well between showers. Long outdoor sightseeing can feel tiring in the close air, especially when clouds dim the day.

Plan around Easter

Good Friday and Easter often fall in April, though their dates change each year. Brazil also observes Tiradentes Day on April 21. These holidays can bring more local visitors, and some businesses may change their hours.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling over a holiday weekend. Outside those periods, April is generally quieter and less expensive than Fortaleza's popular July-to-December stretch. You'll still find the weather less reliable than in those drier months.

Make rainy spells useful

Travelling with kids? Keep a sheltered stop ready for sudden showers, rather than promising a whole afternoon on the sand. The city's short daylight and limited sunshine make indoor plans especially useful.

At Mercado Central, browse the covered stalls for cashew nuts and local crafts while the rain passes. It's a practical break from the weather, and a good place to sample rapadura, a firm brown-sugar sweet. Then head back towards Beira-Mar when the skies clear; the waterfront is more enjoyable without needing to commit to a long beach day.
