December: hot beach days

December feels hot and sticky, with highs around 30°C and warm nights. Rain is usually brief rather than constant, but showers fall on about seven days. November is much drier, so you may notice more cloud and damp spells by comparison.

Beach time at Meireles or Praia do Futuro still works well, and the sea breeze can make a stroll along the waterfront feel easier. Save long walks through the open historic centre for cooler parts of the day. The heat can make Fortaleza's inland sights tiring at midday.

Christmas and Réveillon

Christmas brings family gatherings and festive displays around the city. The biggest public event is Réveillon, Brazil's New Year's Eve celebration. Fortaleza often holds concerts and fireworks at the Aterro da Praia de Iracema, drawing large crowds to the waterfront.

If you're going, expect busy streets around Praia de Iracema and make your way there with time to spare. The celebration runs late, so don't count on a quiet night near the beachfront.

Crowds and local tips

December is part of Fortaleza's high season, as Brazilian summer holidays begin. Expect fuller beaches and hotels, especially around Christmas and New Year, and higher prices than in quieter months such as May or June. January is wetter, but December can still feel busy.

If you hate crowds, visit Praia do Futuro on a weekday rather than joining the New Year's Eve throng. At the Aterro, agree on a meeting point with your group before the concerts begin; the packed waterfront can make finding each other tricky. For a calmer meal, try carne de sol, salted and dried beef, at a restaurant away from the main beachfront.
