You'll still have plenty of daylight for Chan Chan or a stroll around Trujillo's Plaza de Armas. For a beach day, head to Huanchaco; the sea breeze can make the coast feel cooler. If you're planning a long walk through Chan Chan's open ruins, choose a less cloudy part of the day and keep water handy.

Christmas and New Year bring family gatherings, church services and changes to opening hours. Around Christmas, you may find the Plaza de Armas dressed for the season, but it's worth checking that museums and restaurants are open before setting out.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling on the busiest holiday days. Trujillo is a good base for Huanchaco and Chan Chan, but local transport can be busier as people visit family or head to the coast.
