December: hot and rainy

December feels hot, sticky and often cloudy in Belém. Highs reach 31°C and lows stay around 25°C. Rain falls on 25 days, so showers can interrupt time outdoors. November is hotter and drier, while January is wetter.

You can still explore indoor sights, including the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, and enjoy a meal at Estação das Docas. Save long outdoor visits to Mangal das Garças for a break in the rain. Beach days and boat trips to Ilha do Combu can be less reliable when showers roll in.

Christmas in Belém

Christmas brings church services, decorations and family gatherings across the city. It's a quieter cultural month than October, when Belém hosts the huge Círio de Nazaré procession. Don't expect that event in December.

For families, the school break can make Christmas and New Year feel busier than an ordinary December week. Hotels and flights may cost more around the holidays, while the rainy season keeps this from being Belém's most popular sightseeing period. September and October are better choices for drier weather.

Make rain part of the plan

With just 3.5 hours of sun a day on average, keep plans flexible. A sudden shower can make open-air markets and gardens less pleasant, and the humidity can leave you tired after a long walk. Take a slower day around the covered spaces at Estação das Docas, then head out when the rain eases.

A practical Belém tip: try tacacá, a hot local broth, at a stall near Praça da República, where you can duck into nearby covered areas if rain starts. It's a better rainy-day pause than getting caught far from shelter at Ver-o-Peso.
