February: warm and rainy

February stays hot, with afternoons around 29°C and nights still warm. Rain falls on many days, and thick cloud can take the edge off beach plans. The sea-front at Praia de Iracema is still good for a walk when the weather clears, but don't count on a full sunny day at Praia do Futuro.

For sightseeing, keep some flexibility. A rainy spell can make an outdoor visit to Centro Dragão do Mar less appealing, but its galleries and cinemas give you an easy indoor option nearby. The air feels sticky, so long walks in the middle of the day can be tiring.

Carnaval and local crowds

February often brings Carnaval, though the dates change each year. Fortaleza also holds pre-Carnaval parties, with music and dancing around Praia de Iracema, Benfica and Mercado dos Pinhões. The celebrations are lively, but rain can affect outdoor events, so check local listings once your dates are set.

If you hate crowds, avoid the main party areas during Carnaval weekends. They draw more visitors than quieter months, and hotel prices can rise around the holiday. Outside those dates, February is still a less reliable beach month than July to December, when Fortaleza's weather is usually better.

Make rainy days work

Travelling with kids? Keep Centro Dragão do Mar in reserve for a wet afternoon, then head to nearby cafés when the rain eases. If you're after local food, try baião de dois, a filling rice-and-bean dish found across Ceará.

One Fortaleza-specific tip: Praia do Futuro's beach barracas are large seaside restaurants, not just places to grab a quick drink. On a cloudy day, you can settle in for a meal instead of making the trip only for sunbathing. Don't expect February's weather to match a dry-season beach day.
