February feels sticky

Recife is hot and humid, with daytime highs around 31°C and nights near 25°C. Rain falls on many days, often as showers that interrupt an afternoon rather than spoil the whole visit. The sea and a shaded break can still make a good plan; save longer walks around Recife Antigo for drier spells. Avoid relying on a full beach day or a long outdoor visit to Olinda without a backup.

Carnival can take over

Recife's Carnival can fall in February, though its dates shift and some years it lands in March. When it does, expect frevo dancing, street parties and the huge Galo da Madrugada parade, which starts in central Recife. Recife Antigo is a good place to catch performances, but crowds and noise can make quiet sightseeing harder. If Carnival isn't on, the city still feels like summer, with showers breaking up outdoor plans.

Crowds and getting around

February is part of Brazil's summer holiday season, so Recife can be busier than in the calmer September-to-December stretch. Carnival brings the biggest jump in crowds and accommodation prices; outside the festival, demand is less intense. For a practical local move, use the Metro Recife to reach the city centre, then walk around Recife Antigo rather than trying to drive through Carnival street closures. Try bolo de rolo, a thin rolled cake, at a local bakery between outings.
