May to August: the dry, cool stretch
This is the best time to visit, and the data agrees. Days are mild, nights are cool, and rain falls on only six to nine days a month. August is the driest month, with 37 mm. You can walk from Avenida Paulista to the Liberdade district without feeling sticky.
Mornings in June and July can feel properly chilly, with lows around 11°C. Bring a jacket for the evenings. Sun is steady, so it's a good time for Ibirapuera Park and the open-air Feira da Liberdade on weekends. The city also has its Festa Junina season in June, with street food stalls and church fairs. Look for pamonha (sweet corn pudding) and quentão (hot spiced drink).
September to April: warm, then wet
September is a sweet spot. It's warm, at 27°C, and the rain is still light. Spring flowers are out, and you'll find good weather for the city's many rooftop bars.
From October the afternoons turn stormy. By December to March, the heat is thick and the humidity is above 80%. January is the wettest month, with 221 mm on 24 days. Expect short, heavy downpours that flood streets. Plan museum time for the afternoon. The Pinacoteca and MASP are both good rainy-day stops.
April is a good bridge month. It's still warm but much drier than March, and the rain drops to 80 mm.
Crowds and events
São Paulo is a business city, so it doesn't have a classic tourist high season. Hotels fill on weekdays when big trade fairs are on, and they can be quieter on weekends. Brazilian school holidays run in July and from mid-December through January. Locals travel to the coast then, so the city itself can feel calmer.
Carnival comes in February or early March. São Paulo's samba parade at the Sambadrome is a big show, but the weather is hot and wet. If you want the parade, pack for the heat.
In late May or June, the Virada Cultural brings free concerts and shows across downtown, running through the night. It's busy but lively. In June, the Pride Parade on Avenida Paulista draws huge crowds. If you hate crowds, avoid Paulista that Sunday.
For most trips, aim for May to September. You'll get dry days, easy walking and the best of the city's food and culture.
