May to September: dry and comfortable

This is the stretch to aim for. Days are mild and the air feels lighter than in summer. Mornings and evenings get properly cool, so you'll want a jacket when you're out early. Rain is rare, and July and August have only six wet days each. August is the driest month, and it's also the sunniest.

It suits city days well. You can ride the metro into São Paulo and walk Avenida Paulista or the Mercado Municipal without getting soaked. Try the mortadella sandwich there. It's a classic. September is warmer and still fairly dry, so it's a good pick if you find July too cool.

October to March: hot, wet and sticky

Summer here means heavy afternoon downpours. January is the wettest month, with rain on 24 days and only about three hours of sun a day. Streets can flood, and traffic on the Dutra highway gets slow when it storms. Expect grey skies more often than not. Humidity stays high, so evenings can feel close.

Is this a bad time to go? Not always. If you're only passing through, a rainy layover is easy to handle. October and November are fair rather than good. The rain builds, but you still get decent gaps of sun. December to March is the hardest stretch, so keep plans flexible and have indoor options ready, like the museums in central São Paulo.

Crowds, events and who should go when

Guarulhos is mainly a gateway. Its airport, Cumbica, is Brazil's busiest, so the crowds you notice come from travel patterns, not sightseeing. Airport queues peak in the school holidays in July and from late December through January. Carnival in February or early March also brings a rush of flights, even though the big parties are in São Paulo itself.

Looking for events? São Paulo's Virada Cultural, a 24-hour arts marathon, usually lands in May. The city's Gay Pride parade is typically in June and is huge. In late June, look for Festa Junina, with corn dishes, bonfires and square dancing. Check dates before you book, as they shift each year.

For a quiet city trip, pick May, June or September. For the cheapest flights, try the wetter months, but pack a proper rain jacket.
