When to go to Porto Alegre: a seasonal guide
Summer: hot, sticky and quiet in town
December to February is the hottest stretch. Highs sit around 30°C in January and February, and the air feels heavy. Afternoons are for shade, not sightseeing. Rain still falls on 12 to 15 days a month, usually in short, loud storms.
Many locals head to the coast in summer, so the city feels calmer. The Guaíba lakeside sunset is the main event. Locals gather at the Orla do Guaíba with a chimarrão (a bitter herbal tea shared from a gourd). If you want beaches, take a bus to the Atlantic coast, such as Torres. The city's own river shores aren't for swimming.
Autumn and winter: the sweet spot
April to August is when the city is at its most comfortable. Days are mild to cool, and nights get properly cold in June and July, with lows around 9 to 10°C. Humidity is high, so the damp cold gets into your bones. Bring a real jacket, not just a light one. Still, it's great weather for walking the Centro Histórico, the Mercado Público and the Usina do Gasômetro.
Winter is also churrasco season. A long lunch of grilled meat at a churrascaria suits a grey day. Travelling with kids? Winter school holidays in July bring some domestic visitors, but Porto Alegre never gets truly packed.
Spring: green but wet
September is the wettest month, at 165 mm, and October is also damp. Both rate lower for comfort. November is the better pick: it's warmer, sunnier at 6.8 hours a day, and the rain eases. Parks like Parcão and the Redenção are at their best then. On Sundays, the Brique da Redenção flea market fills the park with antiques, crafts and food stalls.
The big event is the Expointer, a huge farming fair held at Esteio, just outside the city, usually late August into early September. It's a good fit if you like livestock shows and gaúcho (southern Brazilian cowboy) culture. Another date to know is 20 September, Gaucho Day, which ends the Farroupilha festivities. Expect parades, traditional dress and barbecues around town.
Choose April to June or November for the easiest trip. Come in July only if you like cold, wet days and cosy meals.
