December: warm summer days

December feels hot and humid, with afternoons reaching 29°C and rain on 12 days. Showers can interrupt a walk, but they don't usually take over every day. You'll get long daylight and plenty of sun for exploring the Centro Histórico or relaxing by the Guaíba.

Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible. A sudden shower can make long walks less pleasant, and the sticky heat can wear you down. Save museums and cafés for the hottest or wettest part of the day. The riverfront is lovely later, when the light softens.

Christmas and summer break

Christmas brings a festive feel, and New Year draws people toward the Guaíba waterfront. December also starts the summer school break, so families are out of town or enjoying local parks and public spaces.

Families who like long evenings will enjoy the extra daylight, but should leave room for indoor stops when the heat builds. Porto Alegre is less of a classic beach break than nearby coastal towns, so don't plan every day around swimming.

December is busier than the quieter months from April to August. School holidays and festive events can mean more visitors and higher prices than in the low season. November is a useful comparison: it's also rainy, but cooler, and it's among the best months overall.

For a simple local evening, head to the Usina do Gasômetro and walk along the Guaíba waterfront at sunset. The open river view is a good reason to time your outing for late afternoon, when the heat eases. If rain rolls in, duck into the Centro Histórico instead.
