December by the coast

Montevideo feels properly summery in December, with warm days and mild evenings. The sea breeze along the Rambla can make a walk beside the water more comfortable than time in the sunny streets of Ciudad Vieja. Rain comes on some days, so a shower may interrupt an outdoor plan.

You'll have plenty of daylight for a stroll through Parque Rodó or a visit to the beach at Pocitos. Save the Mercado del Puerto's indoor parrillas for a rainy spell, and avoid counting on a full beach day every day. The water and sand are best enjoyed when the sky clears.

Holidays and summer crowds

Christmas Day is a public holiday in Uruguay, and many businesses close or keep shorter hours. Montevideo gets quieter in some neighbourhoods as locals head to the coast, while popular beaches and holiday spots become busier. The big Carnival parades aren't a December event; the season's main shows come later.

December starts the summer high season, so visitor numbers and prices tend to rise compared with cooler months. The jump is most noticeable around the holiday period. Families who want beach time should expect more company at Pocitos than they'd find in spring.

A local way to spend the day

For a break from the midday sun, take a slow lunch at Mercado del Puerto, then explore the shaded streets around Plaza Matriz when the day cools. Ask for a chivito, Uruguay's hearty steak sandwich, if you want a filling local meal.

If you're travelling on a tight budget, the Rambla is a fine free outing. Walk the stretch between Pocitos and Punta Carretas, then pause to watch the sunset over the Río de la Plata. Showers can pass quickly, but keep an indoor stop in mind for wetter spells.
