April's warm, damp days

April stays warm, but the air can feel sticky and the sky often turns cloudy. Rain falls on many days, so beach time at Ipanema or Copacabana may come with a shower. It's still a good month for walking around Centro, visiting the Museu do Amanhã, or taking in the views from Sugarloaf when the clouds clear. Skip a long hike in Tijuca Forest on a wet day; muddy paths can make it less enjoyable.

Easter and local holidays

Easter sometimes falls in April, bringing church services and holiday travel. April also includes Tiradentes Day and, in Rio state, São Jorge Day. On São Jorge Day, celebrations at the church in Quintino draw devoted crowds. Check your dates if you want to join in, or prefer a quieter visit.

Quieter than summer

April is generally calmer than Rio's busy summer and Carnival period. You'll often find fewer visitors on the beaches and at major sights, with prices usually less pressured than in peak season. It's not as dry as May, though, so keep your plans flexible.

A useful local trick: take the Santa Teresa tram when the weather's clear, then explore the neighbourhood's steep streets and cafés. In heavy rain, stick to flatter Centro instead; the hills can be slippery.
