Visiting Manaus in March
March: warm and very wet
March in Manaus feels warm, sticky and cloudy. Daytime highs reach 29°C, and nights stay close to 24°C. Rain falls on most days, often enough to interrupt a walk or boat trip. Keep outdoor plans flexible rather than expecting a clear afternoon.
You can still visit Teatro Amazonas, browse Mercado Adolpho Lisboa or take a river trip to the Encontro das Águas, where the dark Rio Negro meets the sandy Solimões. But heavy showers can make long outdoor outings uncomfortable, and the forest trails near the city may be muddy. The sun is limited, so March isn't the best month for a beach-focused stay.
What's on, and how busy is it?
Carnival can fall in March, depending on the year. If it does, look for local celebrations and check dates before you travel; the main festivities often take place in February. There isn't a major fixed March event to plan a visit around.
If you hate crowds, March is generally quieter than Manaus's drier months, especially around the city's main sights. It's also outside the busiest period for many visitors, so rooms and tours may cost less than during the dry-season peak. Prices still vary, and rain can affect which excursions run.
Make rainy days work
Travelling with kids? Leave room in your day for a sudden downpour, then duck into Teatro Amazonas for a guided visit or a performance if one is scheduled. The historic theatre is a comfortable way to spend time indoors without giving up a sense of place.
For a local food stop, try Mercado Adolpho Lisboa between showers. You'll find regional ingredients and dishes, including tacacá, a hot, sour soup made with cassava broth. It's a practical stop when wet weather makes wandering the waterfront less appealing.
