When to visit Nigeria
December to January: the sweet spot
Almost every city on our list agrees on this. December and January are the best months for Lagos, Kano, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Benin City, Onitsha, Aba and Maiduguri. Abuja leans to November and December. Kaduna, Ilorin and Jos stretch the window from November to January.
It's the dry season, so roads are easier and outdoor plans hold up. Expect the harmattan too. That's the dusty wind off the Sahara. It leaves a haze over the sky and can make mornings in Kano and Maiduguri feel cool. Flights can be delayed on hazy days, so leave slack if you have a connection.
This is also high season. Christmas is a big deal, and many Nigerians living abroad fly home. Flights to Lagos and Abuja fill up, and the roads out of Lagos are slow around Christmas and New Year.
North and south run on different clocks
The south is wet for much of the year. Lagos peaks in June at 258 mm. Port Harcourt, Aba and Ibadan peak in September, and Port Harcourt is the wettest on the list at 404 mm. Expect flooded streets and long, slow drives in those months.
The north is drier but hotter. Maiduguri hits 42°C in April, Sokoto 41°C and Kano 40°C. If you're heading to Kano's old city or the dye pits, skip April. Jos is the easier northern pick, since it's up on a plateau and tops out at 33°C in March.
Events and low season
Eid and the Muslim festivals matter most in the north. Durbar, a parade of decorated horses and riders, takes place in Kano and Katsina around Eid. Dates shift each year, so check the calendar before you book.
The low season runs through the rainy months, roughly June to September in most places. Prices and crowds ease, and the land turns green. If you don't mind showers, it's a calmer time to see Lagos or Abuja. Just plan indoor stops, like the National Museum in Lagos, for the heaviest afternoons.
