March: hot and drying out

March in Abuja feels hot, with daytime highs around 35°C and warm nights. Rain is still limited, but showers fall on more days than in February. The sky can be cloudy, and sunshine averages less than five hours a day. It's a fair month for a visit, though sticky afternoons can make long outdoor outings tiring.

Make the most of cooler hours

Visit Aso Rock's viewpoints or the National Mosque in the morning, then save the middle of the day for a cool break indoors. The Abuja Arts and Crafts Village is another easy stop, with stalls under cover. April brings much more rain, so March is still better for getting around without frequent downpours. Avoid planning a long walk at midday; the heat can drain the fun from sightseeing.

Events, crowds and a local tip

International Women's Day falls in March, and Abuja may host related gatherings. Ramadan can also overlap with March, depending on the year; dates follow the Islamic calendar. If you're visiting then, some restaurants may change their daytime hours.

March is generally quieter than the popular November and December period, and accommodation can cost less than in those months. For a local meal, try suya—spiced grilled meat—around Wuse in the evening, when the heat has eased. Check opening hours before heading to the National Mosque during Friday prayers.
