Best Time to Visit Ibadan
Nigeria · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Ibadan is December and January, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 28°C and 31°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over June to October; September is the wettest month with about 328 mm (12.9 in) of rain. April is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Ibadan: a seasonal guide
Dec to Feb: the dry, sunny months
This is the best stretch for a visit. December and January are the top picks, with bright days, little rain and cooler nights. Highs sit around 30°C, but the air feels lighter than the rest of the year. February is still good, though it's a bit stickier and the first showers start to show up.
The dry season also brings the Harmattan, a dusty wind from the Sahara that can haze the sky, mostly from December into January. It's great for walking, but the haze can blur the view from Mapo Hall or the Bower Memorial Tower. Both are classic Ibadan viewpoints. Travelling with kids? This is the easiest time to do Cocoa House, the University of Ibadan campus and the zoo without ducking into shelter.
December is also when many Nigerians travel home for Christmas, so expect heavier traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway and busier markets. If you hate crowds, aim for mid-January.
March to May: the rains arrive
March is where things turn. It's rated Poor, with rain on most days and far less sun. Don't expect clear skies, but expect warm, heavy air. By May it rains almost every day, and some roads around Dugbe and Bodija can flood.
Mornings are often your best bet for getting around. If you're here for work or family, this is manageable. For sightseeing, it's a hard sell.
June to October: peak rain
This is the wettest stretch, and September is the wettest month, with 328 mm. Humidity stays around 90%, so clothes never feel fully dry. Skies are grey and the sun rarely breaks through.
It's the low season for visitors, so you'll find quieter places. Still, rain can turn red-dirt roads to mud and slow traffic to a crawl. Pick this time only if you have a reason, like a wedding or business, and keep your plans flexible.
November: the shoulder month
November is the bridge back to dry weather. Rain falls on about half the days, and the sun returns for much of each day. It's rated Fair, and the city starts to feel easier again. Hotels and roads are calmer than in December, so it's a smart pick if you want decent weather without the holiday rush.
