May: fierce heat

May is a tough month for sightseeing in Kano. Afternoon highs reach 39°C, and nights stay warm, with lows around 25°C. Rain falls on eight days, but it won't usually cool the city for long. Cloud cover is high, yet sunshine averages just 3.9 hours a day.

Keep outdoor visits short. Kofar Mata's famous dye pits are worth seeing, but the work area can feel punishing in the midday heat. Visit early, then spend the hotter hours at the Gidan Makama Museum. Save longer walks around Kano's old city walls for cooler parts of the day.

Holidays and crowds

May Day, on May 1, is a public holiday in Nigeria. Some businesses may close, so don't count on every shop being open. Eid may also fall in May in some years, as its date follows the lunar calendar. If it does, expect changes to opening hours and more local travel.

If you hate crowds, May is often quieter than the busy, cooler months of December and January. The heat puts many leisure visitors off. Hotels may be easier to find, and rates can be lower than in peak season, though prices vary.

April is even hotter, with a 40°C high, while June brings more rain. May sits between them, but it's still a poor month for a packed outdoor itinerary. The city's markets and museums suit short visits better than long walks.
