Dec to Jan: the sweet spot

December and January are the best months to visit Kano. Days are warm but not punishing, and the nights are properly cool. Mornings can feel chilly, especially in January when lows dip to 12°C. The sky is dry and sunny, though the harmattan (a dusty wind from the Sahara) can leave a pale haze. It softens views but doesn't spoil a walk through the old city.

This is the time to see the Kofar Mata dye pits, the Gidan Makama Museum and the huge Kurmi Market without wilting. Travelling with kids? These months are the easiest. You can spend a full day outside and still have energy for dinner.

Feb to May: hot and dusty

February is fair, with warm days and cool nights. After that, it heats up fast. March and April are the hardest months, and April peaks at 40°C. The air is dry, the haze is thick, and afternoons are best spent indoors. May is slightly cooler on paper but feels heavier as humidity builds and the first storms roll in.

If you come now, plan your sightseeing for the early morning and the hour before sunset. Eat suya (spiced grilled beef) in the evening, when the street stalls come alive and the heat finally eases.

Jun to Sep: the rains

July to September is the wet season. August is the wettest, with rain on 27 days and a muggy, grey feel. Roads can flood and local travel gets slow. Few visitors come then, so it's quiet, but it's not a good choice for walking around the old city or visiting the dye pits. June is a mixed month, with storms on about half the days.

Oct to Nov: the return of dry weather

October is a fair month. The rain fades and the sun returns, though it's still warm. November is good: dry, clear and a little cooler by night. It's a smart pick if you'd like to avoid the December rush.

Festival timing here follows the Islamic calendar, so dates shift each year. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha bring the Durbar, a parade of decorated horses and riders in front of the Emir's palace. It's a highlight, but hotels fill and the city gets busy. If you hate crowds, check the dates before you book your flights.
