When to go to Maiduguri: a seasonal guide

Dec to Feb: the best stretch

December and January are the most comfortable months in Maiduguri. Days reach about 33°C, and nights drop to around 15°C. That's properly cool for the Sahel (the dry belt south of the Sahara). You'll want a light jacket in the early morning, especially on a motorbike taxi, known locally as a okada, or a keke (a three-wheeled tricycle taxi).

There's no rain at all, and the sun shines almost all day. The air is dry, so your skin and lips will feel it. In these months you may also meet the Harmattan, a dusty wind from the Sahara. It can leave a pale haze over the city and make the sky look flat. If you're sensitive to dust, carry a scarf or mask.

February is still dry, but the heat builds. It's a fair month rather than a good one.

March to June: hot, then sticky

March and April are the toughest months. Afternoons hit 40°C or more, and April nights barely cool off. It's very dry in March, and the sun is often dulled by dust. Plan your outdoor errands around early morning and after sunset, and spend midday in the shade of a neem tree like everyone else.

May and June bring the first storms. The rain is patchy at first, then more regular. Humidity jumps, so the heat feels heavier. Roads can turn muddy, which slows travel around Borno State.

July to September: the rains

This is the wet season, and August is the wettest. It rains on 27 days that month, so expect rain almost daily. Days are cooler, around 31°C, but the air feels thick and the sky stays grey. Unpaved roads can become hard to use. Most visitors skip these months, so if you travel for work, allow extra time.

Oct and Nov: the reset

October is a fair month. The rain fades, the sky clears and the air feels fresher. November is dry again, with sunny days and cooler nights of about 18°C. It's a good time to go if December feels too far off.

Maiduguri doesn't have a tourist high season. Crowds don't change much with the weather. Travel peaks around Christmas and the end of year, when families return home, so transport can fill up. Dates for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha move each year. If you're visiting then, expect a festive city, with prayers, family visits and shared meals. Check the Islamic calendar before you book.

Before you go, check the current security advice for Borno State. It matters more than the weather when you choose your dates.
