November to February: the cool, dry season
This is the best stretch, though "cool" is relative. December and January are the coldest months, with mornings around 16°C and afternoons that are hot but dry. October is also a good pick by our score, as the rains fade and the air clears. November has no rain at all.
The sky stays blue and the days are long, so it suits walking around town. You can wander the Grand Marché (the central market), see the Chari River bank, and visit the National Museum without getting soaked. Nights are mild enough to eat outside. Between December and February, the Harmattan wind can blow dust in from the Sahara and turn the sky hazy. Photos may look washed out, so don't expect crisp skyline shots.
Note that this is also when most visitors come, mainly aid workers, business travellers and people heading to the Lake Chad region or Zakouma National Park. Zakouma's season runs roughly from November to May, and the park is best for wildlife toward the dry end. Even so, N'Djamena never gets tourist crowds.
March to June: the furnace
Be honest with yourself here. March and April are the hottest months, with highs of 41°C and 42°C. May matches March at 41°C but feels heavier, as humidity climbs and the first storms arrive. Afternoons are for staying indoors. If you must come, do your errands in the early morning and rest through midday.
June is hot and wetter, with rain on about 12 days. It isn't a good time for a first visit.
July to September: the rains
August is the wettest month, with rain on 28 days and humidity near 78%. It's also the coolest in the day, at 31°C, but it feels sticky and grey. Streets flood, and unpaved roads out of the city can turn to mud. Travel beyond the capital is often hard or not possible.
Why come now? Mainly if you live nearby, or you want a quiet city and the green that follows the storms. Otherwise, skip it.
Events and timing
Chad's big dates follow the Islamic calendar, so Ramadan and Eid move earlier each year. During Ramadan, many people fast by day, and some restaurants keep shorter hours. Independence Day on 11 August falls in the rains, so expect parades to be at the mercy of the weather. Check current travel advice before any trip, as conditions can change.
