When to visit Chad
Start with N'Djamena's seasons
N'Djamena is the only city on our list, so this guide leans on it. The best months are October and December to January. October comes just after the rains, when the air is cleaner and the land is green. December and January are the comfortable, dry stretch.
The hottest month is April, at 42°C. The heat is dry and heavy, and the afternoons are hard to enjoy. Shops and offices slow down, and most people stay in the shade until evening. The wettest month is August, with 204 mm. Roads can turn to mud and flooding is common in low parts of the city. Travel outside the capital gets slow in the wet months.
Dry season is the main season
From about November to February, you get the easiest travel. Days are warm, nights are cooler, and long drives are more reliable. This is also the time most visitors come, though Chad is never crowded. If you want Zakouma National Park, in the south-east, plan for the dry months. The park is usually open only in the cooler, drier part of the year, and animals gather near the water. Check with the park before you book.
Heading north to the Sahara, the Ennedi plateau or the Tibesti mountains? Winter is the sensible time. Days are still hot in the desert, but nights can be properly cold. Those trips need a licensed local operator and a proper permit. Security rules also change, so check your government's advice first.
Holidays and quiet months
Chad is mostly Muslim, so Ramadan and Eid shape daily life. The dates move each year. During Ramadan, many people fast in daylight, and some restaurants close until sunset. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha bring family travel, and buses fill up. Independence Day on 11 August falls in the rainy season, so expect celebrations in a wet, muddy capital.
Low season is the rainy months, roughly June to September. Prices and demand are lower, but travel is harder. If you like quiet and don't mind delays, it can work for a short stay in the city. For most trips, aim for October or the cool months from December to January.
