Lagos Weather in December

December: warm and mostly dry

December is hot, with humid air that can make midday sightseeing feel sticky. Rain is limited, so you'll usually have good conditions for a walk around the National Museum or an afternoon on Elegushi Beach. January is just as warm and a little drier, but December has more festive activity.

There's plenty of sun, but the short days mean you won't have a long evening outdoors. Save a stroll along the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge for later in the day, and avoid long walks in the midday heat.

Parties and holidays

Christmas and Boxing Day bring family gatherings, while New Year's Eve brings concerts and parties across the city. Lagos's December party season is often called "Detty December"—a local nickname for the month's packed schedule of events and nights out. You'll find plenty around Victoria Island and Lekki.

If you hate crowds, choose quieter plans away from the main party areas. Travelling with kids? Christmas Day is better suited to a relaxed family meal than a late-night event.

Crowds and getting around

December is one of Lagos's busiest and priciest months for visitors. Flights and hotels can cost more than in quieter months, as people travel home for the holidays and visitors come for the party season. The city can also feel slow when traffic builds between Victoria Island and Lekki.

For a practical way to avoid getting stuck on that route, pick a beach or restaurant near where you're staying. If you're heading to the Lekki Conservation Centre, allow extra time for the drive rather than squeezing it between other plans.
