October is one of Xiamen's easiest months for being outdoors. Days feel warm rather than scorching, and evenings are comfortable for a walk along the waterfront. Rain is limited compared with September, so you can fit in Gulangyu's lanes, Nanputuo Temple and the coastal paths without building your whole day around the weather.

The sea and beaches are still inviting, but don't expect every day to be bright and clear. Cloud can soften the views, and short showers may interrupt a beach visit. You'll get more from Xiamen's city sights and food stops than from planning a full day around sunbathing.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday, known as Golden Week, begins in October. It brings a surge of domestic visitors to Xiamen, especially Gulangyu and popular waterfront spots. Hotels and transport can cost more during the holiday, while the rest of the month is generally calmer and better value.

If you hate crowds, avoid Gulangyu during Golden Week and visit later in October. The island is enjoyable for wandering, but queues and packed lanes can take the ease out of the day. There isn't a major fixed October event you need to plan around; Golden Week is the main thing to watch.

Tips for Xiamen in October

October is warmer and drier than September, while November is cooler and has more rain. That makes it a good month for walking around Zhongshan Road and trying Xiamen snacks, with less sticky heat than late summer. Save strenuous outdoor plans for a dry spell, and keep a flexible option for a cloudy afternoon.

Travelling with kids? Take the ferry to Gulangyu from Xiamen Cruise Center, not the local ferry terminal. The tourist route lands near Sanqiutian, handy for the island's main sights. Golden Week queues can still be long, so visit after the holiday if you can.
