October weather

October feels warm and a little sticky in Chaozhou, but it's more comfortable for walking than September. The high reaches 28°C, with 44 mm of rain across about five days. Showers are less of a bother than September's heavier rain, though the sky can still turn cloudy.

You can spend the day wandering Paifang Street, visiting Kaiyuan Temple or strolling beside the Hanjiang River. Save long walks for the cooler parts of the day; humid afternoons can feel tiring. A beach trip isn't the main draw here, and October's changeable skies may not suit a day built around sunshine.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday falls at the start of October. Chaozhou's old town can get packed with domestic visitors, especially around Guangji Bridge and Paifang Street. Hotels and transport often cost more during this holiday than in quieter weeks.

If you hate crowds, visit later in the month. The streets are generally calmer after the holiday rush, and prices are often easier than during peak travel periods. October is a useful shoulder-season choice, though December to February is considered the best time overall.

Make the most of your visit

Travelling with kids? Keep the old-town walks short during humid afternoons, then take a break for Chaozhou beef hotpot or a cup of local gongfu tea. Gongfu tea is a small-pot, careful style of tea serving.

At Guangji Bridge, don't assume you can cross at any time. Its central section is made of boats and opens for river traffic, so check the day's crossing times locally before setting out. That way, you won't reach the Hanjiang only to find the route interrupted.
