October feels warm rather than scorching in Shantou. Days reach 28°C, evenings ease to 22°C, and humidity stays noticeable. Rain is much lighter than in September, with showers on about five days, so you can spend more time exploring outdoors.

The milder afternoons suit a walk around the old town's arcade streets or a visit to the Shantou Museum. You'll also have useful sunshine for a trip to Queshi Scenic Area, across the bay. Keep indoor plans in mind for rainy spells, and don't expect November's cooler feel yet.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday, known as Golden Week, falls in early October. Shantou can get crowded then, especially around transport hubs and popular sights, as families travel during the national break. Hotels and transport may cost more than in quieter weeks.

If you hate crowds, choose the later part of October. It's generally calmer once the holiday rush ends, though prices can still vary by weekend. December to February is the city's best overall season, so October isn't the cheapest time to visit, but it can be a good shoulder-season choice outside Golden Week.
