February is mild in Shantou, with afternoons around 20°C and cooler nights near 13°C. It's one of the best months for a city break: you can wander the old town, visit the Shantou Museum or take a ferry across the bay without summer heat.

Rain falls on several days, and the sky is often cloudy. Keep your plans flexible for a wet spell; the covered arcades around Xiaogongyuan make a handy place to pause. The sea may feel too cool for a long swim, so treat Nan'ao Island as a coastal outing rather than a beach holiday.

New Year celebrations

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, though its date changes each year. In Chaoshan, the holiday can bring temple visits and Yingge dance performances, a traditional folk dance with painted faces and rhythmic moves. Ask locally about performances in Shantou or nearby Chaoyang, as they're not guaranteed throughout the month.

Travelling with kids? A lively Yingge performance can be more memorable than another museum visit, but holiday crowds may make getting around harder.

Outside the New Year holiday, February is generally a calmer time than busier warm-weather months. During the holiday itself, families travel to visit relatives, and popular sights and transport can feel crowded. For a practical local stop, try beef hotpot in the old town after exploring Xiaogongyuan. It's a warming meal on a cool evening, and a good way to sample Shantou's well-known Chaoshan food. Don't count on every small shop or restaurant keeping normal hours during New Year.
