June feels wet

Shantou in June is hot, sticky and often cloudy. Days reach 29°C, and nights stay warm at around 26°C. Rain falls on 23 days, so expect showers to interrupt your plans. The air can feel heavy, especially around the old town's narrow streets.

You'll still find good indoor breaks between showers. Try Chaoshan beef hotpot, or browse the shops and arcades around Zhongshan Road. Save Queshi Scenic Area and Nan'ao Island for clearer spells; low cloud and rain can spoil the views and make outdoor time less comfortable.

Plan around the rain

June brings the Dragon Boat Festival in some years. The date changes, but the holiday is marked with zongzi, sticky rice dumplings wrapped in leaves. Local celebrations can include dragon boat races, though events vary from year to year.

If you hate crowds, June is usually calmer than the winter high season, when Shantou's weather is much drier. Rainy-season travel can also mean better hotel deals than peak months, but prices vary. July is still wet, so June isn't a dry-weather bargain.

Make room for a change of plan

Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day stop in mind, such as Shantou Museum, and don't count on a full beach day. With only a little daily sunshine and frequent rain, long outdoor plans can feel tiring.

For a local food stop, head to the old town for oyster omelette, a crispy Chaoshan street snack. A useful Shantou tip: leave time between Nan'ao Island plans and the mainland. Rain can make the trip less predictable, so avoid squeezing the island into a tight day.
