June feels warm and mostly dry, with sunny stretches and the odd shower. Days reach 28°C, while evenings can cool to 14°C. Rain falls on about eight days, so a passing shower may interrupt an outdoor visit.

It's a good month for exploring the wide grounds around Genghis Khan Mausoleum in Ejin Horo Banner, or walking around Kangbashi's plazas. July is warmer and wetter, so June suits outdoor plans better. Still, don't count on a full day outdoors without a change in the weather.

Events and crowds

The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in June, though its date changes each year. It's a national holiday in China, so expect more domestic travellers around the holiday itself. Ordos is also a good place to try Mongolian food, such as roast lamb, after a day out.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the holiday dates. Outside that spell, June is one of Ordos's best months to visit, but it's generally calmer than the summer peak in July. You may also find better value than in July, though prices vary by hotel and holiday timing.

June's long daylight gives you time to pair a city stroll in Kangbashi with a trip beyond town. The weather works well for sightseeing, but skip exposed walks if a shower rolls in; there's little shelter across open grounds.

Travelling with kids? Keep the Genghis Khan Mausoleum visit focused on the main complex, then head back to Kangbashi for an easier afternoon. Check the local forecast before setting out: rain is more common in July, but June isn't rain-free.
