December: cold and quiet

December feels like deep winter in Ordos. Days reach about -2°C, but nights drop to -13°C, and the short daylight leaves little time outdoors. It's mostly dry, with just one day of rain on average, but the cold can make long walks feel tough.

You can still see the Genghis Khan Mausoleum in Ejin Horo Banner, though the open grounds may feel bitterly cold. For a warmer break, spend time inside the Ordos Museum in Kangbashi, then explore the district's wide streets in the sunnier part of the day. Skip plans built around long outdoor visits to the grasslands; winter cold can limit the fun.

Holidays and local life

The winter solstice, known as Dongzhi, falls in December. In northern China, families often mark it with dumplings, so it's a good time to try them at a local restaurant. Christmas isn't a major public holiday in Ordos, and December doesn't bring the big travel rush linked with Chinese New Year.

If you hate crowds, December is a quieter time to visit than May, June or September, the region's stronger travel months. Tourist demand is generally lower, so stays may cost less than in peak season, though prices vary.

Make the cold work for you

With just over nine hours of daylight, keep outdoor sightseeing focused and leave time for indoor stops. The sun can feel welcome, but it won't make the evening walk back through Kangbashi warm.

Travelling with kids? Pair the Genghis Khan Mausoleum with the indoor museum rather than spending the whole day outside. In Dongsheng, try a bowl of lamb soup to warm up after sightseeing. December's low comfort score is a fair warning: this is a better month for short outings and cosy indoor breaks than a relaxed outdoor holiday.
