It's much warmer than April, but rain remains limited, with showers on a handful of days. You'll get long daylight hours for exploring, and the dry air makes time outdoors comfortable.

This is a good month for the Kubuqi Desert or a walk around Kangbashi's broad avenues and public art. The grasslands may still look dry rather than lush, so save your hopes for green scenery for later in the season. A rainy spell can make a desert outing less appealing, and evenings near the open plains feel chilly.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in May and brings a busy travel period. Popular sights such as Xiangshawan, also known as Resonant Sand Bay, can feel crowded then. Outside the holiday, May is usually calmer than the summer peak, while its pleasant weather still makes it one of Ordos's best months to visit.

If you hate crowds, avoid the Labour Day travel rush and visit Xiangshawan on a weekday. Prices can rise around the holiday, so dates outside it are often kinder to your budget. May doesn't have a major Ordos festival I'd plan a trip around; the main draw is the spring weather.

Local tips for Ordos

For a cultural stop, visit the Genghis Khan Mausoleum in Ejin Horo Banner. It's a memorial complex, not the ruler's actual burial place. The open setting suits May's clear, mild days, but the wind can make it feel cooler than the city.

Travelling with kids? Kangbashi's wide promenades are easier for a relaxed stroll than a long desert outing. If you're heading to Xiangshawan, check the local transport route from your hotel first: it's outside central Ordos, and getting there takes more thought than visiting sights in Kangbashi.
