May feels like spring in Datong: afternoons are mild, but evenings turn cool. Highs reach 24°C, while lows fall to 8°C. Rain comes on about seven days, so a shower could interrupt a day out.

It's a good month for walking around the city wall or exploring the Yungang Grottoes, where you can spend time outdoors without summer heat. The Hanging Temple makes a rewarding day trip, though wet weather can make its exposed walkways less comfortable. June is hotter and wetter, so May is a useful balance.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in May, and the break can bring more domestic visitors to Datong's best-known sights. Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple may feel much busier then, with higher prices for rooms and transport than in quieter parts of the month. Outside the holiday, May is still a popular time to visit, since it's one of Datong's best months for weather.

If you hate crowds, avoid the Labour Day break and visit the grottoes on a weekday.

Make the most of your visit

May's long daylight gives you room to fit sightseeing into the day, but don't expect warm evenings after a late return from the Hanging Temple. Keep a dry indoor stop in mind for rainy spells; Datong's Nine-Dragon Wall is a striking city-centre sight that's easy to pair with a wander through the old town.

For a local meal, try dao xiao mian, Datong's knife-cut noodles. They're a comforting choice after a cool evening walk. At Yungang, take time to look closely at the carved details inside the caves, rather than treating the visit as a quick photo stop.
