October is crisp and sunny in Datong, with cool afternoons and chilly evenings. The high reaches 16°C, but the low drops to 2°C, so pack a warm layer for after sunset. Rain is light, which makes this a good month for exploring the Yungang Grottoes or wandering the old city.

Those clear days also suit a trip to the Hanging Temple, though its exposed cliffside can feel colder than central Datong. Compared with September, the air is much cooler and rain is far less common, so you trade some warmth for drier roads and clearer skies. That's why September and April to May still come out ahead for most visitors.

Travelling with kids? Keep the outdoor part of your Yungang visit for the warmer middle of the day, then explore the carved caves. At the Hanging Temple, take care on the narrow walkways, which can feel especially daunting in the cold. Check local transport times before heading out to either sight.
