Datong Weather in November

Cold, bright days

November feels like the end of autumn in Datong. Afternoons reach about 6°C, but nights drop below freezing, so the cold is hard to ignore once the sun goes down. It's mostly dry, with just a couple of rainy days on average, and there's often enough sun for sightseeing.

The Yungang Grottoes work well on a clear day, though you'll feel the chill while walking between the caves. Datong's old city wall is another good choice when the sun is out. Skip long, exposed walks around Mount Heng if cold winds would spoil your day.

Quiet streets, no big holiday

November has no major public holiday in China, so you won't find a big nationwide festival drawing visitors to Datong. It's also outside the busier spring and early autumn periods. Expect fewer tour groups than in April, May or September, and accommodation may cost less than in those popular months.

If you hate crowds, you'll likely enjoy the calmer feel at the Huayan Monastery and around the Nine-Dragon Wall. The trade-off is a shorter sightseeing day: daylight lasts under ten hours, and evenings get cold quickly.

Make the most of daylight

Keep outdoor sights for the brighter part of the day, then spend the evening somewhere warm. Datong's coal-fired hot pot is a fitting local meal after a cold walk; look for it in the old city.

Travelling with kids? The Yungang caves are easier to enjoy in daylight, when the carvings are clearer and waiting outside feels less chilly. Check local opening times before setting out, as autumn days are short.
