Visiting Datong in January
January feels severe
January is deep winter in Datong. Days reach about -2°C, while nights can fall to -15°C. The air is usually dry, with little rain, but the cold makes long outdoor visits tiring. You'll get around 9.5 hours of daylight, so there's time for a focused day out.
Yungang Grottoes works well if you break up the visit indoors. The carved caves offer shelter from the wind, though getting between them still means being outside. Datong's old city sights, including Huayan Temple, are also easier to enjoy in short visits. Save long walks along the city wall for milder weather.
Holidays and quieter streets
January has no major festival that falls on the same date every year in Datong. Chinese New Year sometimes lands in January, though it can also fall in February. If it does, expect holiday travel and possible changes to opening hours. The lunar date changes each year.
Outside that holiday period, January is low season. You'll generally find fewer visitors and lower hotel prices than in April and May or September, Datong's more comfortable travel months. If you hate crowds, this can be a good time for Yungang, but the cold is the trade-off.
Make the cold work for you
Choose indoor sights for the coldest stretches of the day, then keep outdoor stops brief. The Hanging Temple is a striking side trip, but its exposed setting can feel especially harsh in winter. Check local access before setting out, since conditions can affect a visit.
For a local warm-up, try Datong knife-cut noodles, called daoxiaomian. A hot bowl is welcome after exploring around Huayan Temple or the old city. If you're travelling with kids, keep the Yungang visit flexible: the caves are sheltered, but the walks between them can still feel bitterly cold.
