Visiting Datong in February
February: sharp winter cold
Datong is still deep in winter in February. Afternoons reach about 2°C, but nights can fall to -11°C. The air is fairly dry, with little rain, and you'll get some sunny spells. Still, the cold can make long walks outdoors tiring.
The Yungang Grottoes work well for a visit, since you can spend time exploring the carved caves. Dress warmly for the walks between them. Save the Hanging Temple for a clear, calmer day; its exposed walkways can feel especially cold. February isn't a great month for long outdoor hikes.
Holiday crowds and quiet days
Spring Festival, China's Lunar New Year, and the Lantern Festival can fall in February. Their dates change each year. If your visit overlaps, expect more domestic travellers and possible changes to opening hours. Datong is otherwise in its winter low season, so it's usually quieter and can cost less than during spring and autumn, among the best months to visit.
If you hate crowds, choose dates away from the main holiday period. You'll find the streets and sights calmer, but some restaurants or shops may close for family celebrations.
Make the cold work for you
February's short daylight window suits a focused city break rather than a packed outdoor itinerary. Spend the brighter part of the day at Yungang, then warm up with Datong-style knife-cut noodles, called *daoxiaomian*. They're a local wheat-noodle dish, often served in hot broth.
For the old city walls, check the wind before setting out. The open route offers little shelter, and the cold feels sharper there after sunset. Keep your evening plans close to the historic centre, where you can duck indoors between sights.
