Visiting Jinzhong in February
February feels wintry
February is still winter in Jinzhong, and you'll feel it. Afternoons can be chilly, and nights often drop below freezing. The air is fairly dry with little rain, but cold winds can make time outdoors brisk. That cold is the main reason this month rates only fair, at 5.3/10. If you can, aim for April to May or September to October instead, when the weather is kinder.
Pingyao Ancient City is still worth your time. Wander its lanes and courtyards, then warm up inside the Rishengchang Draft Bank museum. The city wall is worth seeing too, but a long climb up there can be uncomfortable on a cold day. Save outdoor sightseeing for the sunnier hours, and don't count on a warm evening stroll.
Holiday crowds come and go
Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, though its date changes each year, so check before you book. If your trip overlaps, expect more domestic travellers and busier transport. Some smaller businesses may close during the holiday, while public celebrations add a festive feel. The Lantern Festival may also fall in February.
Outside the holiday dates, Jinzhong is quieter than in the popular spring and autumn months. Hotels and tours are often easier to find, and prices can be lower. If you're travelling in a school holiday, check whether your dates overlap with Chinese New Year before you settle on a plan.
Make the old town easier
All of this makes February a good month for a slow, focused day around Pingyao rather than a packed itinerary. Pick a few sights inside the old city and leave time to duck into a courtyard or teahouse between them.
Before you set out, check the opening arrangements for Rishengchang Draft Bank, especially around Chinese New Year, when holiday hours can change. Then warm up with a bowl of Pingyao beef, a local speciality sold in the area. Outside the holiday period, the quieter lanes make it easier to take in the old town at your own pace.
