Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

March, April and May all score Excellent, and so do September and October. Our comfort score points to April to May and September to October as the best, but March is a decent early choice if you don't mind chilly mornings.

April feels fresh, with highs around 21°C and little rain. May is warmer and still comfortable for walking. In autumn, September is mild but a bit damp, and October is crisp and clear. That's the one to pick for long days outside.

These months suit the old walled town of Pingyao, the main reason most people come. You can walk the city wall, wander the Ming and Qing lanes and visit the Rishengchang, a historic bank. Nearby, the Wang Family Compound in Lingshi is a huge courtyard estate that rewards slow wandering.

Summer: hot, then properly wet

June is hot but fairly dry, so it still works. July is the wettest month, with 128 mm of rain on 13 days, and August is close behind with the same number of wet days. Both feel sticky by Jinzhong standards, and showers can turn old stone lanes slick.

If you come in summer anyway, go early in June. In July and August, keep plans flexible and use the indoor sights, like the courtyard houses and museums. Summer is also school holiday time, so Pingyao fills up with Chinese families. Expect more people and busier lanes in the evening.

Winter: quiet, cold and very dry

December and January are the coldest months, with lows of -9°C in January and -8°C in December. Days are dry and often bright, but the cold bites once the sun drops. February is only slightly easier.

The upside is space. Pingyao's lanes are far quieter, and red lanterns glow against grey brick. Don't expect a long outdoor day, though. Plan short walks, and warm up with a bowl of knife-cut noodles, a Shanxi staple.

Crowds and events

The busiest times are the early October National Day holiday, the May Day break and summer weekends. If you hate crowds, aim for late April, mid-September or late October, outside those holidays.

Chinese New Year falls in January or February, and temples and old towns may hold lantern displays and local fairs. It's cold, and travel is heavy as people head home, so allow extra time for trains. The Pingyao International Photography Festival has usually been held in autumn, but dates change, so check before you plan around it.
