Spring and autumn: the best windows

April is the easiest month to like Handan. Days are warm, nights are cool, and rain is light. May is also pleasant, though afternoons start to feel properly hot. March is mild and dry, but evenings can still be chilly.

September and October are the other sweet spot. The summer rain eases off, the air clears a little, and walking around feels comfortable all day. November stays mild too, with cool evenings. If you want one trip for the main sights, pick April or October.

Handan is the old capital of the Zhao state, so much of what you'll see is outdoors. Think of Congtai Park in the city centre, the Zhaowangcheng ruins (the old Zhao royal city site) and the Wuling Cultural Park. These are all much nicer in mild weather. Day trips to the Xiangtangshan Caves, with their carved Buddhist statues, are also best then.

Summer: hot, then wet

June is hot and fairly dry, but the heat builds fast. July is the hottest month along with June, both with highs of 35°C. July is also the wettest, with rain on 14 days, and August matches that rainy-day count. Expect sticky afternoons and sudden downpours.

If you must come in summer, keep outdoor sights for the morning and plan museum time for the afternoon. The Handan Museum is a good indoor stop. Travelling with kids? Summer school holidays, roughly July and August, bring more local families to the main attractions.

Winter: cold, quiet and dry

December to February is cold, with nights below freezing. It's also dry and fairly sunny, so the days can feel crisp rather than gloomy. Crowds are thin at the historic sites, and you may have the ruins nearly to yourself.

The big exception is Chinese New Year, which falls in late January or February depending on the year. Many locals travel home, some restaurants and shops close for several days, and trains are packed. It's a good time to see family celebrations, but a tricky time for getting around.

Crowds and busy periods

Handan isn't a major international stop, so "high season" mostly means Chinese holidays. Expect more visitors around the Qingming holiday in early April, the May Day break, and the National Day holiday in the first week of October. Both of the last two fall in prime weather, so book trains and rooms early for those dates. Late April and mid-to-late October give you the same good weather with fewer people.
