The air is less sticky than in summer, and the softer warmth suits sightseeing better than strenuous outings at midday.

It's a good month for the Xiangtangshan Grottoes, too, though the stone steps can be tiring. Save longer outdoor walks for the brighter parts of the day, when there's more daylight. Families who want time for parks and historic sights will likely find October easier than the hot, wetter summer months.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday runs from October 1 to 7. Handan's sights and transport can get busier then, as people travel for the week off. Hotels and train tickets may also be harder to secure, and prices can rise compared with quieter parts of the month.

Outside the holiday, October is still a popular time to visit: it's one of Handan's best-weather months. But crowds usually ease after the holiday rush, and you may find better-value stays than during Golden Week. If you dislike queues, visit Congtai Park on a weekday after the holiday rather than joining the holiday crowds.

At Guangfu Ancient City, walk along the old walls and around the moat, then explore the lanes inside. The open stretch can feel cooler once the sun drops, so leave time for the walls earlier in the day. October's calm weather also makes it easier to enjoy the old town on foot without summer heat or frequent rain.
