Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
March to May and September to October are when Liaocheng works best. March is cool but bright, and the data rates it Excellent. By late April it's pleasant enough to walk all day, with highs of 23°C. May is warmer and still comfortable, though the first proper showers show up.
Autumn is just as good. September can feel a bit muggy early on, but October is crisp and dry. If you like long, easy days on foot, this is your window.
Summer: hot, then soaked
June is the hottest month, with highs of 34°C. July is close behind at 33°C, and it's also the wettest, with 200 mm of rain on 17 days. August is nearly as wet. Afternoons are sticky, and storms can turn the streets into puddles.
Liaocheng is a flat plains city, so there's little shade or breeze to help. The old town, with its moat and lake around the Guangyue Tower, is nicest in the cooler evenings. If you have to come in summer, aim for early June, before the rains settle in.
Winter: quiet and cold
December to February is cold and dry. Nights drop below freezing, and January is the coldest month, with a high of just 4°C. It's grey more often than snowy, but you'll have sights mostly to yourself. A bowl of hot local food, like Dongchangfu-style mutton soup, is the best reason to be out in it. November is a good in-between choice if you want cool air and fewer people.
Crowds and events
Liaocheng isn't a big international tourist stop, so crowds are mostly domestic. Expect more visitors around Chinese holidays: Spring Festival in January or February, the May Day break and the National Day week in early October. Trains and hotels fill up then, so late April and mid-to-late October are calmer.
Spring Festival is the main cultural event, with lanterns, firecrackers and family meals. The Mid-Autumn Festival, usually in September or early October, is a lovely time for moon-watching and mooncakes by the water. Local temple fairs and lantern shows can pop up around the new year, but dates change, so check close to your trip.
