Best Time to Visit Jining

Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

Jining is a flat, inland city on the Grand Canal, and it has four clear seasons. The best two are spring and autumn. March is mild and dry, but still chilly at night. April and May warm up nicely, with highs from 23°C to 29°C and not much rain.

Autumn is just as good. September still feels warm, and October is crisp, dry and the sunniest month of the year. If you want to walk the old city walls or wander around the Taibai Lake area, these are your months.

Jining is also close to Qufu, the hometown of Confucius. Its temple, family mansion and cemetery involve a lot of walking in the open. Mild days make that far more pleasant. Qufu's Confucius Festival in late September draws extra visitors, so expect more people then.

Summer: hot, then properly wet

June is hot and fairly dry, with highs of 34°C. That makes it the hottest month, but July isn't far behind. July is also the wettest, with rain on 17 days, and August is nearly as bad. The air turns sticky, and sudden downpours can wreck a day of sightseeing.

If you must come in summer, pick early June. Spend your afternoons indoors, such as in a museum or a teahouse, and save the outdoor sights for the morning. Chinese school holidays run through July and August, so Qufu and nearby Mount Tai get busy with families. Mount Tai is a short train ride away and is best saved for a clearer day.

Winter: cold, quiet and dry

December and January are cold, with lows of -5°C and highs only a little above freezing in the afternoon. It's dry, though, and sights are much quieter. Travelling light on crowds? This is when you'll have the Confucius temple courtyards almost to yourself. The bare trees and grey skies aren't pretty, but the bright red walls stand out.

Chinese New Year, in late January or February, is the exception. Many locals travel home, some shops close for a few days, and the major sights fill up. If you're after warm food, try the local hot pot or a bowl of steaming mutton soup. It's what everyone's eating anyway.

Late November is cool but still pleasant, and it's a good low-season choice if you want fewer people and don't mind a jacket.
