When to go to Jinan: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the best windows
March through May is easy weather in Jinan. March is cool and dry, and you'll want a jacket in the evenings. April is mild and good for walking. By May it's properly warm, with some rain on about seven days. Autumn is just as good. September still feels summery but is far less muggy than August. October is crisp, bright and calm, and it's probably the single best month for a first visit.
These are the months for the classic sights. Walk around Daming Lake, wander the old streets of Furong Street, and see Baotu Spring, the best known of the city's many springs. Jinan is nicknamed the "City of Springs," and you'll want to see the water without a heatwave or a downpour getting in the way. Hiking up Thousand Buddha Mountain also works best now.
Summer: hot, then very wet
June is hot but still fairly manageable, with warm evenings and rain on about ten days. July and August are a different story. Rain falls on most days, humidity climbs, and the air gets sticky. July is the wettest month, followed closely by August. Storms can arrive fast in the afternoon, so keep your plans flexible.
If you do come, use the mornings for outdoor sights like Daming Lake, then retreat to the Shandong Museum when the sky turns. Dip into a teahouse or have a bowl of the local sweet and sour carp. Summer is also when Chinese school holidays begin, so popular spots like Baotu Spring fill up with families. Travelling with kids? Expect queues.
Winter: cold, dry and quiet
January is the coldest month, and nights fall well below freezing. December is nearly as chilly. Rain is rare, but the air feels raw and the sun is often hazy. Crowds are thin, so you'll have parks and museums mostly to yourself. Steaming springs look striking in the cold, with mist rising off the water at Baotu Spring.
Winter suits food-focused city breaks. Try hot bowls of sweet potato soup, Shandong-style dumplings and lamb dishes while you warm up indoors. The big exception is Chinese New Year, which falls in late January or February. Many shops close for a few days, and trains get packed as people head home. If you hate crowded stations, avoid travelling right around it.
Which month for which trip?
For sightseeing and photos, pick April, May, late September or October. For quiet streets and lower prices, try November or early March, when it's cool but not harsh. The national holiday in early October, called Golden Week, brings the biggest crowds of the year, so expect busy trains and attractions. If you can, go in the weeks just after it.
