September feels warm rather than scorching in Jinan. Afternoons reach about 27°C, while evenings cool to around 16°C. It's a good month for wandering Baotu Spring Park, strolling beside Daming Lake or climbing Qianfo Mountain. Rain falls on several days, so a shower may interrupt an outdoor plan. The paths around the springs can also get slippery when wet.

August is hotter and much wetter, so September is a more comfortable time to explore on foot. Still, don't count on every day being clear: cloud cover is common, and the air can feel humid.

Festivals and crowds

The Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September. If it does, expect family outings and moon-viewing around Daming Lake, along with more visitors during the public holiday. The date shifts each year, so it doesn't land in September every time.

Outside the holiday, crowds tend to ease from August's summer peak. September is still a popular month, though, since the weather is pleasant. Prices are generally less pressured than during China's October Golden Week, when domestic travel gets especially busy.

If you hate crowds, visit Baotu Spring on a weekday rather than during the Mid-Autumn holiday.

A local tip

Give yourself time to follow the spring-fed streams through the old city. Jinan's famous springs feed waterways near places like Wulongtan Park, making a relaxed walk feel different from a usual city sightseeing day.

For a rainy spell, try a bowl of Jinan-style sweet foam soup, called tianmofang locally. It's a savoury breakfast made with millet and vegetables, and a cosy stop after a damp walk. October is drier and cooler, but September offers a useful balance: warm days for exploring, with less summer heat.
