Mild autumn days

October feels comfortable for exploring Jinan on foot. Afternoons are mild, while evenings turn cool, so the change is noticeable after sunset. Rain is limited, and there's plenty of sunshine for outdoor plans.

Baotu Spring Park and Daming Lake make an easy day out. You can stroll between the springs, old streets and lakeside paths without the heavy summer heat. The Thousand Buddha Mountain is also a good choice for a hike. Skip long outdoor plans if rain arrives, and save a cosy meal of Shandong-style braised chicken for a cool evening.

National Day crowds

China's National Day holiday falls in early October, and the week-long break brings more domestic visitors to popular sights. Baotu Spring and Daming Lake can feel busy, especially during the holiday itself. Prices for hotels and transport may rise then, compared with quieter weeks later in the month.

If you hate crowds, visit after the holiday. Jinan is still in its pleasant autumn season, but the main sights are generally calmer. April and May are also popular months, so October outside the holiday can be a good middle ground.

Make the most of your visit

Travelling with kids? Pair Baotu Spring with nearby Wulongtan Park, where shaded paths give little legs a gentler outing than the climb up Thousand Buddha Mountain.

For a practical local tip, walk from Baotu Spring to Daming Lake through Quancheng Road and the old city lanes. It's an easy way to see Jinan's famous springs and historic streets in one outing. Keep that walk for the afternoon, then find dinner near Furong Street, a well-known food lane. Check opening times for individual sights before setting out, especially during National Day.
