Mild days outdoors

October feels like a comfortable month for seeing Zibo. Days reach about 22°C, while evenings cool to around 9°C. Rain is limited, so you can spend time outdoors without often having to change your plans.

The cooler air suits a walk around Zhoucun Ancient Commercial City, where old shopfronts and lanes are easier to explore than in summer heat. You can also visit the ruins of the ancient Qi state capital at Linzi. For a longer outing, autumn is a good time to walk among the hills at Yuanshan National Forest Park. Evenings can feel chilly, though, so don't plan to sit outside for hours without something warm.

National Day crowds

China's National Day holiday begins on October 1 and brings a week of domestic travel. Popular sights and trains can be crowded then, and hotel rates may rise compared with quieter days later in the month.

If you hate crowds, visit Zhoucun after the holiday week rather than during it. October is still one of Zibo's best months overall, so it can draw visitors beyond the holiday. But ordinary weekdays are generally a calmer choice than the national break. Compared with September, October is cooler and drier, making a full day of sightseeing more pleasant.

Barbecue weather

October's mild days are a good fit for Zibo barbecue, the local meal of grilled meat wrapped in a thin pancake with scallions and sauce. You cook the skewers at the table, so the meal can feel cosy as the evening cools.

Travelling with kids? Choose a barbecue restaurant where they can sit away from the hot grill. At Zhoucun, make room for its sesame cakes, a local specialty, alongside a wander through the old commercial streets. Skip long outdoor plans on a chilly evening; the drop from daytime warmth is noticeable.
