Best Time to Visit Weifang

Spring: the easy season

March is still chilly at night, with lows around freezing, but afternoons are mild and our data rates it Excellent. April and May are the sweet spot. Days run from 22°C to 28°C, the rain is light, and you can walk all day without feeling worn out.

This is the time for Weifang's old-town streets and the Shibei area, and for a day trip to Qingzhou, an ancient town about an hour away with its old city wall and temples. It's also the right season for the Weifang International Kite Festival, usually held in April. Weifang calls itself the kite capital of the world, and the sky over the beach at Binhai fills with huge kites. Dates shift each year, so check before you book a bed.

Summer: hot, then properly wet

June is warm and still fairly dry, so it works if you don't mind heat. July is the hottest month, with highs of 33°C, and it's also the wettest. Rain falls on about 16 days, so expect sticky afternoons and sudden downpours. August is nearly as bad, and both months rate Poor.

If you must come in summer, plan indoor stops. The kite museum and the Shibei old-town houses are good rainy-day choices. Chinese school holidays run through July and August, so domestic tourists fill the coast. Travelling with kids? That's the busiest time, and the rain doesn't help.

Autumn: the second best window

September is still warm, at 28°C, but the rain eases off and the sky clears by October. October is the finest month for walking. Highs sit near 22°C, only about four days are wet, and the evenings are cool enough for a bowl of hot noodles.

Early October is China's National Day holiday week. Expect crowds at the main sights and full trains, so book transport early or come in the second half of the month. Weifang is known for its street snacks, including spicy chicken and the local roasted meats, and they taste best on a cool evening.

Winter: quiet and very cold

From December to February, highs stay between 4°C and 7°C and nights drop below freezing. January is the coldest month, and it's rated Poor. The air is dry and the skies are often grey. You'll have the streets to yourself, but the beach isn't a draw. Come only if you want low prices and a quiet city break. Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, brings a short burst of local travel and fireworks.
