Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

March to May is when Linyi works best. March is cool, with highs around 16°C, and it's still a bit chilly in the evenings. April is mild and mostly dry. By May it's warm enough for T-shirts, though showers start to creep in. Come back in September or October and you get a second go at it. October is crisp and clear, with just a few rainy days.

These months suit walking the old streets, visiting the Wang Xizhi former residence (the famous calligrapher was born here), and getting out to Mount Mengshan, a big forested hiking area. Trails are comfortable, and you won't be sweating by ten in the morning.

Spring and autumn are the busy times for domestic tourists, especially around the early May Labour Day holiday and the National Day week at the start of October. Expect full trains and packed hillside paths on those dates. If you hate crowds, aim for mid-April or the second half of October.

Summer: hot, then properly wet

June is hot but still manageable. Highs reach 32°C and rain falls on about ten days. July is the one to think twice about. It's the wettest month by far, with 284 mm and rain on 19 days. August is only a little better, and both months feel sticky. Hiking gets slippery, and views from Mengshan can disappear into cloud.

Is there an upside? Fewer foreign visitors, and rain often comes in heavy bursts rather than all day. If you must come, stick to indoor stops and have a flexible plan. Early September is a good compromise. It's still warm, but the worst of the downpours have eased.

Winter: cold, dry and quiet

December to February is the low season for travel. Highs sit between 5°C and 8°C, and nights drop below freezing. Rain is light, but the cold can feel sharp on open ground. Sights are quiet, and you'll often have them nearly to yourself.

The big exception is Chinese New Year, which falls in late January or February depending on the year. Many locals travel home, some restaurants close for a few days, and family gatherings take over the city. It's a good time to see local traditions, but not to expect everything to be open.

November sits in between. It's cool, calm and fairly dry, a decent choice if you want quieter streets and don't mind a jacket.
